This is a great piece from The Incidental Economist that speaks to my last post about BMI.
Too often I hear people tell me that BMI is a poor predictor of body composition and I agree it is because it’s not really about body composition it’s about risk of death and disease. Plain and simple being overweight or even underweight is not healthy.
I’ve had guys try and explain to me that BMI isn’t a good measure for them because they have a lot of muscle mass. When it comes to most of us that is rarely going to be the case. If I were being brutally honest most of these guys are just fat and unwilling to admit it or truly don’t realize it. You may in fact have more body fat than you’d like to admit and are hiding behind BMI. If you want to get the truest sense of your body composition opt to have a trained professional do the pinch test or be willing to hop in the tank.
